Do you think this was wrong of me?
I bought my little girl her first Cabbage Patch doll today, I plan on giving it to her for Christmas. I picked the doll because it shared my daughter's name. The doll happened to be African American, we're white. I didn't think anything of it & my brother in law acted like I was an idiot for buying this particular doll. He said I should have bought her a white doll. I don't see why it matters, but wanted to see what others thought.
Thanks guys, guess I just needed to hear it from other people that I wasn't wrong in this situation.
With all due respect, it sounds like your brother - in - law is a bigot. What's wrong with a caucasian child playing with an African American Doll? Would he have the same reaction if she made an African American friend, and say you should "return" the child and get her a white friend? I think it's GREAT that you got your daughter a doll with a skin color that's different from hers. It will teach her to be more open - minded than your BIL. After all, we all belong to the same race - human.
